Cooktown artists busy planning their 'Cooktown Creations' Exhibition that will open in CAIRNS On Monday 20th February and rin to Saturday 25th February at C.1907 Contemporary Art Space, Lake St, City Place.

This is a great chance to give everyone a taste of what talented locals we have up here. We will be informing people about the great places to visit in and around Cooktown as well as the upcoming events that Cooktown will be hosting.

YOU are invited to attend the opening - see invitation!

We are taking COOKTOWN to Cairns. In this tiny gap of ONE week we be using our time to promote our town!

Congratulations to Jean Haack, awarded the Australia Day 2012 Cooktown,"Volunteer of the Year."

Jean has worked as a volunteer at the Elizabeth Guzsely Gallery as a member of the Cooktown School of Art Society Inc. for 30 years. As a volunteer responsible for opening and working long hours in the gallery, also as Treasurer for 13 yrs. She has helped with the Annual Art Exhibitions and also many fund raising efforts over the years.

I think this is a well deserved win and she is a credit to the society, well done Jean.

Drawing Life for Kids on Tour - QAG GoMA - 14, 15, 16 January 2012

Cooktown kids are amazing! Many joined Drawing Life for Kids on Tour and used their creativity to draw with family and friends. Our President Lea's 'Imagination in Everyday Life' Drawing Party was a huge success and the climax to the three day free school holiday art activity put together by the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane and generously paid for by the Fairfax Family Foundation and Santos.

"In stretching their imagination the kids didn't let us down. They couldn't wait to present their unusual creations to the others and everyone enjoyed lots of laughs with a party on the porch of the gallery at the end of a really fun morning," said Tracey Cass, organiser of the event. These free school holiday events are proving really popular with kids and parents of Cooktown and we look forward to offering more in the future. Volunteers from the gallery happily set-up and supervise because the packages are so organised and the kids have such a good time, it's a pleasure to have them in the gallery enjoying themselves so much.


With drawing templates, an art journal to keep and other art materials provided by QAG - GoMA most generously sponsored by the Fairfax Family Foundation and Santos the Cooktown Kids had an wonderful three day art experience over the school holidays at the Elizabeth Guzsely Gallery with many Cooktown locals and members of the Cooktown School of Art Society! Drawing Life for Kids on Tour is a part of the major summer exhibition ‘Matisse: Drawing Life’ at QAG GoMA. ‘Matisse was first introduced to drawing by his mother and drew all of his life often using his drawings as a basis for larger works, he also took great pleasure in simply drawing life as he saw it around him, including his family and friends. Like Matisse, children are invited to draw life as they see it, keeping their art journal close at hand and recording their daily lives.

A celebration of the beauty & unique characters of Cape York.

Three categories:

Characters of the Cape: COLOUR or B/W
A portrait that expresses the unique characters of one or more of the Cooktown regions residents (people/animals/plants, etc). This photo is a ‘study’ of a character or characteristic of the Cape. Your photo will be unframed as it will be mounted on board with all other entries for consistency in display.

Granite
This photographic challenge requires granite on which much of our landscape is shaped, determining the colour and quality of our environment. Granite must appear in your entry although there is no ‘rule’; ie, it simply has to appear in the image and may be the focus of the photo or ancillary (but not irrelevant).

Multi-medium Entries
There is no limit to the other materials used to create your entry other than to remember that the photo must be integral tot he design of the entry. Multi-medium entries must be framed and will be judged separately to photo only entries.

For 'A Garden Seat For Two' - made from timber pallot, off cut timbers and old (used) steel brackets that form the base, with refrigerator condensors forming the seat and back. Air conditioner coils form the sides with old tiles on top creating a firm surface for a cup of tea. (wood, steel, aluminium, tiles, paint - all from rubbish dump including the paint!

Cooktown Recycled Art Exhibition organised by Diana Burns and workers of Cooktown School of Art Society opened 26th March 2011 with an afternoon tea at 2:30pm at the Elizabeth Guzsely Gallery in Charlotte Street. Entries were of a high standard and showed a lot og imagination in turning waste and old throw aways into useful and or beautiful art! The four categories of - Functional - furniture, craftwork, wearable objects; Garden Art - 3D free standing; Artistic with imagination being the key; and Environmental from materials and waste going to landfill, being functional and energy efficient and illustrating the pertinence of environmental issues. The competition was pen to all Cook Shire community members, groups and organisations and had adult and junior sections in each category. Well done Cooktown!

Action Meeting Minutes Thursday 24th Feb 2011

The 'action' crew have discussed what we'll be up to for the next few months. The main discussion was about painting the gallery walls and floor and doing a tidy up on the front wall as messy glue under present signage. Hanging system will be purchased. It was agreed that the first stage of renovations will commence early March (final dates to be confirmed) and a week will be set aside and the gallery closed for this purpose.

Work to be completed at this working bee includes:

Paint the internal walls – colour a pale yellow/white.
Clean (and paint if possible) the external front wall of the gallery – get rid of the glue marks under the letter and paint over the lettering, including a dark orange splash in the existing logo.
Paint the floor tiles once Rosie has had a change to research and cost the appropriate product. Colour to be a pale grey.
Nicole to purchase wire, clips and other items for new hanging system as discussed. It was agreed that Nicole would spend up to $3,500 and at the same time, fill out a RADF application for assistance in the costs. The project will proceed regardless of the outcome of this grant application.

STAGE TWO:
It was agreed that Tracey would get THREE building quotes for the front door and extended gallery space as discussed.

GENERAL:
It was agreed that the three gallery bank accounts be consolidated into one. Tracey Blumer to also apply to become signatory of that account.

Draft submission for the Cook Shire Council’s Community Plan was posted on Facebook and members invited to provide feedback within the next three weeks.

If you wish to have any input contact either Tracey, Rosie, Nic or Faye.

As per the AGM last year this group has authority to make decisions for the Cooktown School of Art Society. All members will be kept in the loop but it is up to you to be involved. Lack of involvement or comment will be taken as consent to any changes so don't be shy!

These photos show how Artworks Basic can seperate the tonal and colour values on a photo which is a great help in planning a painting.

Check out the Artworks Basic Website and you will see how helpful the program can be. Artworks Basic features include photo editing, painting effects, and color analysis for composition.

The software is based on elements of visual art with a colour reference system, a canvas window, grid overlay and basic photo editing. They allow a free download of a 30 day trial.

21st Century Kids Summer Festival On Tour in Cooktown - Kids Drawings

On Saturday 15th January as part of Kids Summer festival On Tour Artist Jorge Méndez-Blake's 'Discover Treasure Island' invited kids to listen to a CD of swashbuckling sounds and draw a picture that illustrates what they are hearing. Artist John Pule, writer and poet whose art works often combine words and images, invited kids to engage with Niunean legends and culture by responding to the artist’s word paintings.

These are the drawings that the kids of Cooktown did.

21st Century Kids Summer Festival On Tour in Cooktown on Saturday 15th January 2011.

Kids made their own bird species using shredded paper and bird templates created by the artist.. These pictures show the wonderful results of a little imagination. Each bird in it's nest was labeled with the birds name, habitat, foods eaten, and behaviours. Australian artist Fiona Hall translated her interest in the migratory patterns of birds and nest-making into a hands-on activity. I had a fun day assisting with this kids art activity.

An art activity by artist Tony Albert invited all earthlings to become honorary citizens of the Alien Nation — but not before passing the citizenship test! New Zealand artist Campbell Patterson had kids think of funny activities they could perform. The kids were enthusiastic and the short video clips will be made into a performance art film to be uploaded to Cooktown Art Blog and Youtube!

Artist and poet John Pule had the kids drawing word paintings in a collaborative way on large art paper.

Inspired by a Brazilian tradition, artist Rivane Neuenschwander invited visitors to select and tie people’s wishes to their wrists. According to the tradition, the wish is granted when the ribbon eventually falls off.

Some put ribbons in their hair which looked great as well!

Titled ‘21st Century: Art in the First Decade’ it will occupy the entire Gallery of Modern Art and focus exclusively on works created between 2000 and 2010. It will feature over 140 artists from more than 40 countries.

The 21st Century Kids Summer Festival over the summer holidays celebrates the unique ways we have lived our lives in the first decade of the 21st century, and asks us to imagine what the future of our world might hold!

The action-packed 11-day program features a series of exciting new media performances, artist-run workshops and activities, as well as a future-themed animation program at the Australian Cinémathèque.

This interactive game is especially for visitors under 5. Set in a natural history museum similar to those seen in Justine Cooper’s artworks, the aim of the game is to free trapped animals from the lockers and return them to their natural habitats.

Fiona Hall Fly away home 2010
Australian artist Fiona Hall has translated her interest in the migratory patterns of birds and nest-making into a hands-on activity. Young visitors make their own species of bird using templates and paper money created by the artist.

Romuald Hazoumè (MIB) Made in Brisbane 2010
Beninese artist Romuald Hazoumè travelled to Brisbane to conduct workshops with local high school students to create a large scale installation especially for ‘21st Century Kids’. As part of 21st Century Kids Summer Festival on Tour, visitors will have the chance to view this series of short documentaries which provide insights and highlights of this unique experience and the relationship built between the artist and students over the two week period.

Bharti Kher Nothing is ordinary 2006
Indian artist, Bharti Kher makes art with very small stickers called bindis, making pictures with them and sticking them on her sculptures. For 21st Century Kids Summer Festival on Tour, Bharti Kher has designed a special bindi for visitors to decorate themselves with before exploring the other activities.

Jorge Méndez Blake Discover Treasure Island 2010
In the Gallery of Modern Art’s Children’s Art Centre, Mexican artists Jorge Méndez Blake has created large murals based on Jorge’s favourite novel as a child - author Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale Treasure Island. For 21st Century Kids Summer Festival on Tour, children are invited to listen to a CD of swashbuckling sounds and draw a picture that illustrates what they are hearing.

Campbell Patterson Yes yes, no no 2010
New Zealand artist Campbell Patterson makes videos of himself that are funny, odd and fascinating. Campbell has created a list of challenges especially for children to do. Children are invited to watch his video, ‘Lifting my mother for as long as I can’, then complete the challenges and think of other funny activities they can perform.

John Pule Drawing words 2006
John Pule is an artist, writer and poet whose art works often combine words and images. Pule’s large-scale collarborative drawing project invites everyone to engage with Niunean legends and culture by responding to the artist’s word paintings.

Rirkrit Tiravanija Untitled (time sausage) 2010
The work of artist Rirkrit Tiravanija aims to bring visitors together and create living artworks in art galleries and museums. Tiravanija’s work for 21st Century Kids on Tour invites generations of children and their grandparents to share family histories, stories and images. First Life Drawing Class - Gesture Drawing

First Life Drawing Class was doing Gesture Drawing at the Elizabeth Guzsely Gallery. We explored movement of the model in space, as we looked for a sense of the overall form and a way to suggest the essential feeling.
Marks had to be quick and deliberate to sum up the pose. We tried to show different emotions in 5 to 30 seconds!? Yep! It sounds bizarre to do a sketch that quickly, but the sense of urgency it creates adds great energy to the drawing. You haven't got time to think about unimportant details.

Below is a sample done by me on the night. We had nine artists attend and I wish I had photos of their drawings to show as they did so much better than myself! Will try to get some to show after next weeks class which will cover contour drawing and perspective.

Art, craft, photography, horticulture and baking entries inside. Local produce display - fruit and veggies and home brew. Horse events, riding demonstrations and cattle, goats, chickens and ducks. Kids enjoy the Animal Nursery where they can pet and cuddle some cute farmyard animals or Side Show Alley with rides and attractions. Community group’s stalls to find out about services they offer. Also a watermelon and pie eating competition. Refreshments at CWA Tea House and all your favourite food stalls from the local markets.

A truly dedicated member of the Cooktown School of Art Society, Jean Haack, will be celebrating her 80th birthday on 16th August 2010. She will be on duty in the Elizabeth Guzsely Gallery as usual that Monday.

Jean was involved when the Cooktown Art Society was formed in 1978 by a group interested in improving their artistic skills. In 1977 Elizabeth Guzsely who had arrived in Australia as a refugee came to live in Cooktown. With a Diploma in Fine Art from Hungary she had the expertise and agreed to hold art classes for all those interested. Various venues were utilised for the classes; the local school, the Shire Hall, and the first exhibition of paintings was held in the then rather dilapidated RSL Building. Elizabeth had a dream of a gallery space for Cooktown.

The small group of artists worked hard to raise sufficient funds to achieve this seemingly impossible goal. Then it was discovered in old cadastral maps dating back to 1874, that there was a piece of land, which had once housed a School of Arts. Cook Shire Council records indicated that the land was officially reserved for this purpose by Government Gazette in 1879. Negotiations with the Lands Department resulted in a name change for the artist’s group to the Cooktown School of Art Society and cleared the way for construction of the long hoped-for gallery building on the site. In 1988 the Cooktown Art Society became incorporated as the Cooktown School of Art Society Inc and the Gallery was officially opened.

What started with a small group of hard working people interested in art has continued to be successful over the last 32 years thanks to the individual efforts of people like Jean.

Drop in to say hi and wish her the best. We don't see many volunteers with the dedication of Jean nowadays!

However if you’re not that fussed about this idea - then Cook Shire Community Events Centre would really be chuffed if you were able to give feedback on what public ....art you would like to see at the new centre.

At the time these photos were taken the paintings were yet to be completed. The close up pictures show what participants 'found' in a textured, coloured background created in stage one of the process. When a decision was made the subject was blocked in and further enhanced by building up layers, contrast, highlights and form.

The Judy Pomroy Acrylic Art Workshop held in Cooktown at the Elizabeth Guzsely Gallery was a great success.

All the art work produced was exciting and inventive.

Judy showed us how to use all types of acrylic mediums and painting techniques to create interesting and textural backgrounds as the basis for a found painting.

Members of the Cooktown School of Art Society over many decades, Elsie and Betsy passed away last year. They are missed by fellow artists. Over the years they contributed so much to the success of the art society and volunteered their time to run exhibitions and art workshops. Flying Arts Workshop

Rain affected the turn out to the Cooktown Flying Arts Workshop 'Project Belonging' but those who attended enjoyed discussions with artists Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan. Working together a layered cube sculpture was created to demonstarte the process.

Alfredo and Isabel have held successful exhibitions of 'Project Belonging' where cube sculptures in the hundreds are used to build a walk through structure.

Hopevale and Rossville children enjoyed the 'In Flight Art Workshops' with good numbers attending.

Paul Brinkman Director Cairns Regional Gallery 2010 Art Judge

The Cooktown School of Art Society CSAS has recently secured Paul Brinkman - Director of the prestigious Cairns Regional Art Gallery as judge of this years’ 32nd Annual Art Exhibition held in conjunction with the Cooktown Discovery Festival.

Paul is charged with managing the largest regional gallery in Far North Queensland, servicing an area that encompasses Cape York and the Torres Strait. Having 13 specialist staff, the gallery is recognised as one of Queensland’s most entrepreneurial regional galleries.

Paul’s tertiary qualifications include a Bachelor of Secondary Education in Art and Design, a Graduate Diploma in Management (Arts) and a Masters of Management (Arts and Cultural Management) through the University of South Australia. In 2005, he was selected by the Gordon Darling Foundation to participate in the prestigious Museum Leadership Program through the University of Melbourne’s Melbourne Business School.

Spokesperson for the CSAS Diana Burns said that “We’re thrilled to have someone of this stature come on board, raising the profile of the exhibition. We’re equally pleased that Paul has seen that this community arts event is worth supporting and look forward to utilising his expertise as an arts judge”.

The Cook Shire Council has also pledged its support, by kindly donating the $1,000 prize for the Cook Shire Council Award, in which a painting depicting a recognisable scene of the Cook Shire will be acquired for its collection.

Local artist, Heather Willcox took up a brush and started painting five years ago. Before this she was used to pottery but when she branched out into painting she discovered a relaxing pastime. Trying the mediums of acrylic, pastel and oils she started producing representational works that many admire. She is pleased if the works sell and is happy to pass on and share her interest at weekly painting get togethers at her home on Wednesday between 2 and 4pm. If anyone would like to join the Wednesday Art Group phone Heather on 40695691. Heather is a member of the Cooktown School of Art Society and the Cooktown Creative Arts Association and volunteers her time to assist both organisations. In May 2009 the new Hopevale Arts and Cultural Centre Nganthanun Bamawi Bayan Gallery opened. The same year three Hope Vale artists, Evelyn McGreen, Joyce Jacko and Phylomena Naylor, graduated from Tropical North Qld TAFE having completing a Cert 4 in Arts. Evelyn is working towards a Diploma in Visual Arts.

Evelyn McGreen is a Guguu Yimithirr woman of the Thupi Warra clan. She is the daughter of Roy and May Dick, who were moved away from Hope Vale mission by American forces as a precaution during World War II. Born in Woorabinda, Queensland n 1942, her family moved back to Hope Vale in the early 1950s. Evelyn is an accomplished basket weaver and has practiced and taught traditional arts and crafts her whole life.

Recently her art caught the national attention of collectors and curators resulting in an exhibition titled Wawu Bajin - Spirit Baskets at Fireworks Gallery in Newstead Brisbane 4 March to 10 April 2010.

The hand coloured lino cut prints produced in collaboration with Theo Tremblay and Paloma Ramos at Canopy Art-space Cairns and the Hopevale Arts and Cultural Centre show eight woven basket designs.

Manager of Hopevale Arts and Cultural Centre, Troy Dennis, says that these art works were first launched at the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair in August 2009.

The print folio was purchased by Parliment House Canberra for their permanent collection and by Queensland Premier Anna Bligh and Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin and can be viewed and purchased at the Hope Vale Arts and Cultural Centre

Evelyn is now working at Canopy Arts-space with master printer Theo Tremblay on a suite of etchings to go into the 2010 Cairns Indigenous Art Fair.

Flying Arts Workshop titled 'Project Be-Longing' with artists Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan will be held on Saturday 27th March from 10am to 4pm at the Elizabeth Guzsely Gallery. Places limited to 15 so book early.

The workshop will explore the experience of travel, relocation and reorientation. Participants are encouraged to bring a collection of their personal items and create conceptually rich unified sculptures. The box shaped sculptures contain layers of precisely arranged personal possessions such as clothing, toy cars, books, photos, bags and shoes. Placement, installation and individual stories will be explored. The artists will work with participants to transform their possessions into 15 sculptures which will then be exhibited in the gallery.

Painting Class with Elizabeth Johns starts from 20th February to 13the March to run over four Saturdays from 1:30pm to 4:30pm. Cost of $10 per person. Bring your own art materials. The class will cover the basics of colour, composition, and perspective and will encourage students to unleash their creativity painting from still life, photos, outside (landscape) and their own imagination.

The RADF funded Judy Pomroy Weekend Mixed Media Painting Workshop will be held on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th April at the Elizabeth Guzsely Gallery.

Local Art & Craft Shop - SALE Now On!

In January 1991 a public gathering led to the formation of the Cooktown Creative Arts Association. Their first meeting was on 13th February, 1991.

Many workshops and classes have been held over the years, including design, drawing, wood carving, poetry, art history, painting, life drawing, silk painting and stained glass to name a few.

In the beginning classes were held at the school, CWA hall, members’ homes and Gungarde hall. After the enormous success of an exhibition of local art and craft run by the Cooktown Regional Action Group, the group took on the Art-space in lower ground floor of Kindergarten.

In September 2001 the Kindy moved so CCAA obtained the lease and the new Art and Craft Shop was open! Located at the Old Cooktown Railway Station in Charlotte Street it is staffed by artists and volunteers. The Art-space beneath is in use for workshops and with a gas kiln now installed, for firing pottery.

The shop provides local artists with a source of income, as well as a wonderful venue to showcase their talents.

Wood work, furniture, paintings, jewellery, stained glass, quilts, baskets, silk paintings, T-shirts, post cards, etched glass and photographs are tastefully presented in this space.

Friendly staff are at hand to welcome customers as they browse through the shop. Supporting local arts and crafts is easy with such a marvelous range produced.

Kid's APT on tour in Cooktown! What a Great Day!

On Saturday 16 January 2010, Cooktown hosted a free day of art activities simultaneously with the Queensland Art Gallery, as part of the Kids’ APT Summer Festival. The Kids’ APT on Tour featured interactive activities for children and families created by a number of artists in the exhibition, including Ayaz Jokhio, Minam Apang and Runa Islam. All the materials to create the art using the different themes was provided free of charge and posted to Cooktown by the Queensland Art Gallery Gallery of Modern Art. The projects were developed to reflect the themes of the Asia PacificTriennial exhibition and offered children and families insights into contemporary art across the Asia Pacific region. The children who attended in Cooktown were enthralled and excited by the many art activities. Creativity was very high and the results as seen in the photos show that the children produced many exciting and fun art works. The adults were just as interested in participating and creating. Lucky Cooktown is hosting the Kids’ APT on Tour program from the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art's sixth Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art.
Everyone with kids is welcome to attend a day of free activities at the Elizabeth Guzsely Gallery, from 10.30am-2.30pm Saturday, January 16.
The session will include drawing, craft and interactive activities developed by leading artists from Asia, the Pacific and Australia.
This offers children and families insights into contemporary art and lets you express your creativity in new and exciting ways.
Activities include making a thaumatrope (optical toy); paper fruit language puzzle; a plane from everyday materials and found objects; a picture using Asian scripts; self portraits and a Funky Buddha.
If we get a DVD/TV and computer on the day, we will view art films H the Happy Robert 2009 by Ho Tzu Nyen; Elsewhere and Trail by Hiraki Sawa, and a interactive computer program Patterns of Infinity by Monir Shahroudy.
With this kids event, we will be re-opening the Elizabeth Guzsely Gallery for 2010, following the Christmas and New Year closure to allow our hard-working volunteers to have a holiday.
As we are staffed by volunteers we can't always open the doors every day, so any locals interested in manning the gallery for a couple of hours will be welcomed with enthusiasm!

New Artistic Talent In Cooktown

Nicole Jakins moved to Cooktown six months ago to practice as a professional artist. Having stepped away from the profession of art gallery director at the prestigious Stanthorpe Regional Gallery two years ago, Nicole now creates from her temporary eco-studio in the Cook Shire.In this bushland setting she has a quiet workspace for her journey of self-discovery. Nicole is able to construct unique sculptural body adornments with inspiration coming from the seedpods and fruits found in the areaNicole has recently been awarded a Regional Arts Development Fund grant to carry out field trips to some of Cooktowns incredibly bio-diverse National Parks, taking photograph's and sketching botanic specimens. This will lead to a public arts project titled 'Tropical Splendor' which includes an extensive sculptural and jewellery exhibition. Nicole says that the project will appeal to a wide audience of not only art-lovers, but also bush walkers, gardeners, field naturalists, and those interested in environmental conservation, and that it is an opportunity to further promote the biodiversity of the Cook Shire’s national parks. As a member the Cooktown School of Art Society and Elizabeth Guzsely Gallery, Nicole is an invaluable source of knowledge on curatorial and gallery management.

A recent work titled 'A Walk in the Park' was a finalist for the Contemporary Wearables Art Prize 2009, hosted by Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery. After finding reference material on fleas, Nicole first made a sculptural model out of aluminium sheeting. She then had to take the model apart and use the shapes as templates for cutting out the final copper pieces. Each piece was then cold formed, drilled and riveted together with sterling silver wire. A few weeks later, bruised fingers and much less tolerance...one giant flea.

Artist's First Solo Exhibition On Show

Local artist Lea Stevens is gaining increasing recognition for her paintings of animals and the environment as related to her indigenous cultural heritage.

As a member of the Cooktown School of Art Society and volunteer at the Elizabeth Guzsely Gallery she has been successful with sales of her paintings and attracted a lot of interest from locals and visitors to Cooktown.

Now she has her first solo exhibition titled 'From the Land, Through the Rainforest, to the Sea'. Two paintings sold on opening night, Friday 4 December and the exhibition is showing until Tuesday 19 January, at the UMI Art Gallery Martyn St, Cairns.

Lea comes from a large family of nine children with links through her father to the mbarbarum and Yedinjie groups and through her mother to the KuKu Yalanji, and Guguu Yimidthirr.

She first took an interest in art in the 1980's after watching family members painting and making artifacts.

Lea says her uncle Joe and aunt Betty ran an Aboriginal arts and crafts shop, Anuaka, where they sold all their art work. They encouraged her to paint boomerangs and clap-sticks and the tools the ancestors used. She observed older cousins and local murris making and painting these artifacts.

In 2007, Lea picked up a paint brush and started painting with acrylics on canvas.

At the Naidoc celebration in Cairns Lea's sister helped to get a stall together where they sold family art works, It was a real confidence boost when her art work sold to tourists and locals, and one of her paintings was purchased by a gallery owner.

Lea then had a showing of her work at the Cooktown Art Festival, and later at Cardwell’s Land and Sea Conference Festival where she also did well.

With the opportunity to showcase her paintings in Cairns, Lea's artistic career continues to develop. Any locals who have the opportunity should call into UMI Art Gallery and support a talented new local artist.

Meanwhile, Cooktown's Elizabeth Guzsely Galley is closed for the summer and will reopen on January 16.

As volunteers are on holiday or out of town we don't have the staff to open on a regular basis - but the galley can open for a group that needs a place to meet or is interested in running an event.

The gallery is in the centre of town, has a small kitchen area, tables and chairs, toilets and parking out the back.

In Cooktown - 16th January 2010 Kids APT One Day On Tour

Cooktown School of Art Society has arranged with the Queensland Art Gallery Of Modern Art (GOMA) to show a Kids’ Asia Pacific Triennal - APT - on tour program as part of the Summer Festival. This will be at our gallery. It involves a "one day program of highlights to be held throughout the state. Regional galleries will host a free day of activities simultaneously with the Queensland Art Gallery. Saturday 16 January 2010 between 10.30am and 2.30pm".

Kids’ APT on Tour features interactive activities for children and families created by a number of artists in the exhibition. The exhibition offers children and families insights into contemporary art across the Asia Pacific region.

Cooktown was going to participate in 2008 APT which was the ‘Andy Warhol Summer Festival – Queensland’ held on 19 January 2008. We also missed the chance to host ‘Kids’: Contemporary Australia on Tour’ held on 19 January 2009 so now we are involved for 2010 we are hoping this will be successful so we will be able to continue to host Kid's APT on Tour in the future!

Cooktown School of Art Society had obtained RADF funding to put on a week-end Art Workshop in April 2010 by well known professional artist Judy Pomroy

Judy's enthusiastic and innovative approach to painting techniques inspire students in her classes. Judy will show you that it is never too late to start to paint. Her philosophy is that art is a shared experience.

Her paintings have been successfully exhibited in venues on the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sydney and have found their way into private collections throughout NSW, QLD and Canada.

You will need to book to attend as numbers will be limited. Once bookings open - see the adverts and flyers in 2010 - you will be given a list of materials needed for the course and the fees which we keep as low as we are able so aspiring artists have the opportunity to attend.

When she was approached by the magazines editor and asked to do a painting demonstration and article for publication Margaret gave this a lot of thought. Colour Theory Art Workshop - Week 2

Today we continued our colour theory art workshop. Using primary, secondary and tertiary colours and black and white we mixed a range of different hues, shades and tints. We also did a tonal scale chart from white to black with each participant choosing one colour and trying to do at least 18 values. This was a very interesting exercise and demonstrated the patience needed to work out correct proportions of pigment to white or black to create the required value. We also did a 7 X 5 grid mixing tertiary colours through a range of values. Elizabeth has been making us work! Very good for developing our art skills.

In Cooktown we have great local artists who are able to display their paintings in the gallery. Recently a colour theme was used to re-arrange the art works. The public feedback has all been positive. It is amazing that something as simple as the positioning of a painting alongside another work can highlight and enhance the works. Having this colour flow has re-invigorated the paintings on display and the visitors to the gallery are enjoying the art!

The open forum produced many ideas for the gallery. There was great interest in seeing more art education for beginners or people new to art and painting. Some members have volunteered to put together a program of instruction and will then advertise times, dates and costs. Keep your eyes open! Details of our first art lessons will be posted soon! There were many other ideas and these will be discussed at our General Meetings.

NEXT GENERAL MEETING IS ON MELBOURNE CUP DAY! All you race betting winners (and losers) please take the time to drop into the gallery at 5:15pm Tuesday 3rd November for the meeting. Hope to see you there.

We had 13 members and 1 guest attend. Also new applications for membership.

A date has been decided for an open forum to plan for future events. Adverts will be posted and the community asked for ideas.

Cooktown locals hold a market in the park every Saturday. For the Cooktown Art Festival Week-end everyone made a special effort to display Art, craft, jewelry and produce for sale. The yummy food stalls are always busy.

Cooktown Art Festival - Woodcarving - Mark Berg

Mark Berg's discovery of woodcarving has become a lifelong passion. He captures the colour, texture and beauty of woods expressed through elegant and functional works. The usefulness and unique properties of wood and an attraction to natural science led Mark to realise that the pleasure we humans gain from making and using tools has persisted from the stone age to the present. He first discovered his enthusiasm for woodcarving making handles for garden tools. He studied Polynesian wood and stone artifacts and tools at Auckland museum and learnt basic carving techniques working with Maori woodcarvers. These skills have been honed over twenty years working on Australian hardwoods.

Some of the works can be seen at Aukland University or in Cooktown at the Courthouse, Hospital and Botanic Gardens. Most works are in private collections.

Filmed at Cooktown Art Festival opening night Friday 14th August 2009 at the Cooktown Creative Arts Association in Charlotte Street Cooktown. The local belly dancers provided this wonderful entertainment. There was also music and the fashion parade of Arty Bras with many fantastic entries.
